Jens Birkemose

Jens Birkemose is well known for his colourful and expressive paintings and graphics, but his oeuvre also includes poetry, mail art and collages. He has an educational background from The Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen and later short studies at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Birkemose paints large-scale, abstract paintings playing with recognizable elements and hidden motives. His musical background is reflected in his paintings with the seeming randomness of the brushstrokes, inspired by John Cage’s music compositions. He was the 1991-recipient of the Eckersberg Medal, and his works are displayed at Statens Museum for Kunst and ARoS, Aarhus Museum of Modern Art.
