Microsoft Corporation

If you have ever had to draw up a document or give a presentation, chances are, you have used the services of Microsoft Corporation. Considered to be one of the world’s biggest technological corporations and famous for its computers and software such as its Office suite, Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates in 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Microsoft is famously known for its creation of the Internet Explorer web browser, and its main ventures include the Microsoft Windows operating systems, software packages such as the Microsoft Office suite, and various lines of consumer electronics including its Surface desktops, laptops, and tablets. The company’s latest offering from 2020 is a fast-growing segment of cloud computing capabilities which contains its public, private, and hybrid server products and cloud services. These include popular cloud infrastructure Azure and SQL Server.

Microsoft has made several corporate acquisitions, their largest two being the acquisition of Skype Technologies in 2011 and LinkedIn in 2016. The company generates its revenue through three major streams: Intelligent Cloud services, the sales of Personal Computing devices, and its offering of Productivity and Business Processes which includes Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Office.

The company is headquartered in Redmond, Washington. In 2008, Steve Ballmer replaced founder Gates as CEO, and in 2021, the company has over 181,000 employees in 177 office locations worldwide, with 60% of them located in the United States.

Microsoft’s IPO at NASDAQ took place in March 1986 under the ticker ‘MSFT’ at a share price of $21. In 2021, it has a market capitalization of $2.526 trillion, and it is considered one of the most valuable companies in the world. Its major shareholders include Vanguard, Blackrock, SSGA, and Fidelity.
